Though she’s conquered the small screen thanks to the part of April Ludgate in NBC’s recently concluded Parks and Recreation, Aubrey Plaza has yet to cement her place as a leading actress in Hollywood. Now, though, she’s set to join a stacked cast in what sounds like a surefire hit – the actress has signed on to co-star alongside Zac Efron and Adam Devine (Workaholics) in Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates.
Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect) co-stars in the 20th Century Fox/Chernin Entertainment pic, about two party-animal brothers who place an online ad for dates for an upcoming wedding in hopes of finding soulmates who can keep up with their wild lifestyle.
Jake Szymanski, who has directed episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Saturday Night Live, will helm the project, working from a script by Neighbors team Andrew J. Cohen and Brendan O’Brien. Jonathan Levine (50/50) is producing.
This marks the second collaboration between Plaza and Efron, who recently wrapped production on Dirty Grandpa. The project will also find Plaza reuniting with Kendrick, whom she co-starred with in cult action-comedy Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.
For Plaza, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates might be the project that sends her stock as a lead actress sky-rocketing. She earned strong notices for her performance as a journalist investigating a mysterious inventor in indie sci-fi Safety Not Guaranteed, but the actress’ heralded breakout comedy pic, raunchy The To-Do List, instead marked a creative low point. With the amount of talent involved on this pic, a similar result doesn’t seem likely.
