The Art Directors Guild and the Costume Designers Guild have become the latest groups to announce their nominees for 2013. They may not be considered as big or as important as the Producers Guild, the Directors Guild, or the Writers Guild, but they are still a pretty good prognosticator for who will eventually take home the Oscar in their respective categories.
The Art Directors split their categories up into Period, Fantasy, and Contemporary Films (along with various TV categories), but the main one of importance here is the Period, where we find the more fanciful, eye-catching designs. Here, we find what was mostly expected: American Hustle, The Great Gatsby, Inside Llewyn Davis, Saving Mr. Banks, and 12 Years a Slave. If I had to venture a guess, I’d say that The Great Gatsby has this one in the bag. There were those who didn’t enjoy the film (I actually found it decent), but there’s no denying that the production design was astounding, so don’t be surprised if you see it win the category and then claim Oscar gold on March 2nd.
The Costume Designers also split their nominees up into the same main categories, and again the place to concentrate your attention is on the Period films where we find: 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle, Dallas Buyers Club, The Great Gatsby, and Saving Mr. Banks. This category is a little more open, but again, if I had to venture a guess, I’d once again bet that The Great Gatsby will take it with its beautiful costumes.
It’s a bit of a comfort to find out that the experts over at Gold Derby completely agree with me, overwhelmingly predicting that Gatsby will take both categories come Oscar night. However, you never know what the Academy is going to do (Lincoln suddenly taking Best Production Design over expected winner Anna Karenina shows how surprising they can be). If 12 Years a Slave is as big a hit with them as many believe it will be, perhaps things might be a little different. We’ll just have to see how it plays out.
The Art Directors Guild will announce their winners on February 8th, while the Costume Designers Guild will announce their winners on February 22nd.
Check out a complete list of the nominees for both groups below (including those for television) and let us know what you think in the comments!
