Can you hear that? Listen closely, for there’s a palpable sense of excitement starting to build around James Wan’s Aquaman. Though the DCEU is still going through a bit of turmoil, there’s much to look forward to with the franchise’s sole release this year and the positive buzz just keeps on building.
Earlier this week, some test screening reactions leaked out which pointed to Warner Bros. potentially having another Wonder Woman–sized hit on their hands and now, we’re hearing a bit more about what was shown, with further praise being heaped upon the pic. Granted, test screenings are hardly indicative of how the general population will respond to a film (just look at Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad), but at this stage, it’s certainly reassuring to hear that so far at least, people are digging Aquaman.
While chatting on today’s episode of Meet the Movie Press, the gang discussed Wan’s upcoming blockbuster and noted that many are saying it was a “palate cleanser” for them after the disappointing Justice League. Furthermore, it’s been said that Arthur Curry’s standalone outing plays like an Indiana Jones film, with the action scenes in it putting both JL and WW to shame. Excited yet?
Said to have elements of a horror movie – hardly surprising, given James Wan’s résumé – Aquaman will be unlike any other DCEU outing we’ve seen before. That’s something that Wan himself reiterated while talking with EW a few months back, too, stating that his upcoming standalone pic is more of a traditional “action-adventure quest film.” Sign us up.
“It’s going to look very different, it will feel very different — aesthetically, tonally, story-wise — it’s my own take,” said the director. “It’s a much more a traditional action-adventure quest movie.”
Aquaman docks in theaters on December 21st. And for the first time in four years, this Christmas will be completely Star Wars free, as Lucasfilm has angled Solo: A Star Wars Story for release on May 25th.
