Slowly but surely, we’re learning more about what to expect from the upcoming Aquaman solo film when it comes to how the major players will appear. I mean, Justice League gave us a good idea of what’s in store for Jason Momoa’s Arthur Curry and Amber Heard’s Mera’s respective fashions, but it wasn’t until today that we knew what Nicole Kidman’s Queen Atlanna and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Black Manta looked like.
Fortunately, the next issue of Entertainment Weekly has other goodies in store, for it also offers our first look at Patrick Wilson as King Orm AKA Ocean Master. Having previously acquainted himself with DC in the past by portraying Nite Owl in Watchmen – not to mention earning Warner Bros. a ton of cash with The Conjuring series – it’s no wonder Wilson landed this high profile gig.
From where I’m sitting, this particular image does a fine job of setting the stage for the film’s central conflict involving Arthur and Orm, which could play out in a variety of ways. But if you were to ask this lover of the source material, good money says the two won’t get along by the time the third act rolls around.
The following caption offered by EW may serve up some hints as to what’ll be witnessed, as well:
“Aquaman faces off with his ambitious half-brother King Orm (Patrick Wilson) who wants to declare war on the surface world.”
Upon reading that, I recommend you acquaint yourself with both the graphic novel and animated film bearing the title of Justice League: Throne of Atlantis, because not only will they familiarize you with the dynamic shared between Arthur and Orm, but also due to the fact that they’re somewhat different takes on the same tale. Odds are the filmmakers looked toward one or both for inspiration during the creative process.
Aquaman opens in theaters on December 21st.
