Having screened at CineEurope earlier this month, director James Wan confirmed via Twitter, a little over a week ago, that the first trailer for Aquaman would finally see the light of day at San Diego Comic-Con in just a few weeks. Although, up until this point, the particulars of his subaquatic superhero feature have, understandably, been few and far between, the approaching of the “largest convention of its kind in the world” does appear to have opened the floodgates regarding the sixth installment in the DC Extended Universe.
The Aquaman footage shown at CineEurope was lauded, due in large part to the “dizzying” special effects, “bright” action, and “good humour” not typically associated with films from DC. Then, late last week, one eagle-eyed DC fan put forth an intriguing theory that insinuated “Unite The Seven” is actually referring to Arthur Curry’s attempt at uniting the Seven Great Cities of Atlantis, rather than the titular supergroup of which he is a part.
Now, following Entertainment Weekly’s exclusive first look, the man behind the camera himself, James Wan, took to his official Instagram this past weekend to share, intentionally or not, a peek at an underwater fight scene from Aquaman. Granted, the image, which you can check out for yourself below, is in the background and rather blurry, but as it could possibly be depicting an Atlantean and Xebel warrior in battle, at this point, we’ll take what we can get.
The first release for DC and Warner Bros. following the catastrophic theatrical run of Justice League, to say there’s quite a bit riding on the success of Aquaman would be a massive understatement. Seeing as the solo venture will also be proceeding a pair of box office mammoths, namely Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War, a misstep here will only provide fodder to the DC/Marvel fandom war.
How it will ultimately turn out is too hard to say right now, of course, but again, with San Diego Comic-Con just around the corner, we should get a better idea of what’s in store for us very soon.
