For many fans, it’s a huge relief to learn that Aquaman director James Wan is seemingly distancing himself from the previous films in the DCEU. Of course, in terms of continuity, that would be catastrophic and we’ll leave that to the numerous Joker pics in production. But in terms of the feel and look of the solo effort, Arthur Curry’s standalone outing seems set to be a breath of fresh air. Or, sea air at least
After all, just a few days ago, Warner Bros. film chief Toby Emmerich told Entertainment Weekly that Wan has delivered an “extraordinary” expansion of the DC Extended Universe, one that’s capable of steering the superhero franchise in a totally new direction with its “great humor” and the fact it “works on so many levels.” And we’ll finally get to see what the director’s cooked up for ourselves next month.
Yes, that’s right. As expected, the very first trailer for Aquaman will be swimming into San Diego Comic-Con. Wan confirmed as much on Twitter earlier today, sending fans everywhere into a frenzy and eagerly counting down the days until the event gets underway. Which, for those not keeping track, is Thursday, July 19th. The Warner Bros. panel, however, won’t be until some point that weekend, with the studio yet to announce exactly when it’ll take place.
Either way, we’ve now got just over a month to go until we’re welcomed into the underwater world of Aquaman and can finally lay eyes on the DCEU’s next effort, which has many singing the praises of star Jason Momoa. In fact, executive producer Peter Safran believes the actor’s in the same league as Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) and Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) in that he’s perhaps the perfect match for his on-screen character.
Via EW:
Rarely has a superhero character been married to the real-life actor as much as Aquaman and Jason Momoa,” executive producer Peter Safran declares. “He’s authentically from two worlds, he’s this real physical specimen, he’s got this humor which he’s never been allowed to play before — in every regard he is Aquaman.
Aquaman officially lights up theaters on December 21st, and will be thrust into the middle of a three-way grudge match involving Bumblebee: The Movie and Alita: Battle Angel. Who wins? You decide.
