You’re likely not the only one out there who ended up being somewhat disappointed with Bill Murray’s foray into the MCU with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, with the beloved star ultimately ending up being more or less insignificant cannon fodder in the film. For one of the most prolific actors in sci-fi cinema, it definitely felt like a wasted opportunity.
As it turns out, Murray’s character Lord Krylar originally had a larger involvement in the Ant-Man threequel, which didn’t come to pass in the cut that landed on theater screens, according to one of the film’s other stars, Katy O’Brian, who played Jentorra. The actor dished about how Krylar was taken prisoner by Kang and his forces, rather than getting killed off after one scene, via Inverse:
“Instead of just getting killed, he did a whole space pursuit with them and then wound up with Kang and got arrested or something. It was a lot. It would’ve been like a three-hour movie. They took him to jail and then he had some really cute little jail clips, and then I helped bust him out, and then he pretends that he’s with me the whole time and ready to fight. And I’m like, “Bro, come on.”
O’Brian adds that the minds behind the production of Quantumania were chopping and changing the script until the last day of shooting, which may perhaps be an inkling of insight as to why the film turned out to be a bit of a hot mess. Here’s hoping the MCU’s next entry, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 bucks the downward trend when it arrives in theaters on May 5, 2023.
