By this point in the game (read: promotional campaign), Warner Bros. has rolled out so many promos, TV spots, clips and mystical trailers for King Arthur: Legend of the Sword that it’s a wonder there’s any footage still left to show on May 12th.
That’s the U.S. theatrical release date – May 19th for those across the pond – and with little over a week to go until Guy Ritchie’s fantasy-fuelled remake stakes a claim for box office glory, WB has pumped out one final media dump comprised of TV spots and a 360º experience that allows you to take a deep dive into the lush rolling hills of Camelot and beyond.
Pitched as a bona fide franchise-starter at Warner Bros., Legend of the Sword places Sons of Anarchy‘s Charlie Hunnam in the grubby boots of Arthur, the man who would be king. Betrayed by the ruthless Vortigern (Jude Law), who slaughters his nearest and dearest in cold blood to lay claim to Camelot’s throne, Hunnam’s haggard lead begins to rise up through the ranks. Imbued with the power of Excalibur, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword takes the historical beats of Arthurian legend and injects some fantastical elements – “fuck-dust,” as Guy Ritchie affectionately calls it – so expect to see some mind-blowing fight scenes and towering, 300-foot elephants.
The sword will be pulled from the stone in suitably epic fashion when King Arthur: Legend of the Sword roars into theaters on May 12th. One glance at the calendar will tell you that Guy Ritchie’s fantastical reimagining is sandwiched between Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Alien: Covenant – a tall order, no matter how you spin it – so it’ll be interesting to see how Warner’s bold franchise-starter fares at the box office.
