‘Annabelle comes home’ are three words you probably wouldn’t want to hear on a cold winter’s night – especially when it involves that Raggedy Ann doll which continues to haunt our dreams far more than we’d like.
It is, of course, the breakout star of The Conjuring series, New Line’s wildly impressive and successful horror franchise that’s set to take a dark turn later this year with the aptly titled Annabelle Comes Home. It’s the third spinoff film headlined by the now infamous doll, only this time, it’ll include paranormal investigators/demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren, who’ll surely do their best to attempt to contain Annabelle. But little do they know, it’s going to take more than just their best to get a handle on the situation.
They won’t be alone, of course, as a local priest will assist. But neither of them will stand much of a chance once Annabelle’s identified her next target: the Warrens’ ten-year-old daughter, Judy, and her friends. From there, chaos ensues, and apparently, it’ll be of the R-rated variety.
Yes, we’re learning today that Annabelle Comes Home has been rated R for “horror violence & terror,” which shouldn’t surprise anyone given that the previous two films fell into a similar category. Of course, an R-rating doesn’t necessarily mean the threequel will be a hit, but it’s certainly a step in the right direction.
Besides, the franchise is as strong as ever when it comes to those all important box office numbers. Last year’s The Nun is the highest grossing entry in the cinematic universe at the moment, while the recent Curse of La Llorona has so far taken in $121 million on a budget of just $9 million. Can Annabelle Comes Home sustain that momentum at the box office when it arrives in theaters on June 28th? Time will tell, but we’re certainly feeling optimistic.
