Eighteen films have been deemed worthy of contention for the 2011 Best Animated Film Oscar, meaning there will most likely be five films nominated. The list of 18 includes films like Rango and Kung Fu Panda 2, alongside foreign films and others that have yet to be released.
Last year, only 15 films made the cut, which is why there were only three nominees. Five films from this list of contenders will probably be nominated this year:
- Rango
- Kung Fu Panda 2
- Puss in Boots
- Rio
- Cars 2
- Hoodwinked Two! Hood Vs. Evil
- Gnomeo & Juliet
- Mars Needs Moms
- Winnie the Pooh
- The Adventures of Tintin
- Arthur Christmas
- Happy Feet Too
- Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked
- The Smurfs
- Alois Nebel
- A Cat in Paris
- Chico & Rita
- Wrinkles
Personally, I think that Rango and The Adventures of Tintin are safe bets for nomination. There will probably be some foreign film or movie that hasn’t come out yet grabbing the third spot, and the fourth and fifth will likely go to a more commercial film that got generally good reviews, like Puss in Boots or Rio.
On a side note, I really enjoyed Winnie The Pooh, so I’m hoping that it gets some attention as well.
And now the real question: will Pixar’s Cars 2 be nominated? Obviously, it’s not up to par with their previous films, so it probably couldn’t win. But will the Academy throw Pixar a bone?
What do you think? Who would, and should, be nominated? Let us know in the comments.
