An attempt to shame James Gunn over alleged DCU hypocrisy massively backfires

The DC fandom are now appointing themselves Gunn's online bodyguards.

All we’ve seen of the shiny, new DCU so far is a five-minute announcement video from James Gunn in which the DC Studios co-CEO unveiled the full 10-project slate for Chapter 1: Gods & Monsters. It seems that’s enough to win over the vast majority of the franchise’s faithful fandom, as an attempt to blast the filmmaker for an apparent bout of hypocrisy has been shot down quicker than the Flash with a machine gun.

Over the weekend, Gunn dropped the revelation that he categorically didn’t fire Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel after his Black Adam cameo because his Superman: Legacy reboot was actually in the works before that movie came out. In response to this, one Redditor took to the r/DC_Cinematic subreddit to reshare an old tweet of Gunn’s from back in March 2022. When asked if he would ever want to make a film about one of DC’s Trinity (Supes, Batman, Wonder Woman), Gunn said at the time that he wouldn’t be interested as he’s “much more drawn to less popular characters and telling their stories.”

In an attempt to shame him, the OP commented: “A few months after this tweet, James Gunn decides to write a Superman film.”

Unfortunately, for this riled-up Redditor, few in the comments seemed to be in the mood to mock the new DC king. Instead repliers turned the tables around and went to town on the idea that someone should be vilified for simply changing their minds.

For others, this is just a case of Gunn’s situation and employment causing his opinions to evolve.

In any case, Gunn remains committed to lesser-known characters. e.g. Creature Commandos and The Authority.

It’s possible to like Swamp Thing and also write Superman.

You can’t really blame Gunn for not being able to see into the future. He ain’t no Doctor Fate, after all.

Likewise, we also can’t see into the future and will have to wait to witness James Gunn’s DCU debut when Superman: Legacy arrives on July 11, 2025.
