Those who’ve already had the chance to watch Avengers: Endgame won’t be forgetting its ending anytime soon. The conclusion to the Infinity Saga (which spans over 20 films) closed the chapter on a handful of storylines and characters, and based on the film’s box office success, it looks like viewers were pleased with the Russo brothers as they’ve done right by the Marvel Cinematic Universe fanbase.
Of course, for every funny quip and well-choreographed action scene, there were plenty of tearjerking moments that won’t be forgotten anytime soon. Aside from Iron Man’s death, Black Widow’s sacrifice on Vormir took audiences by surprise. Interestingly, though, it looks like things went down a little differently in the original cut of the film.
As reported by Heroic Hollywood, a few crew members who worked on Avengers: Endgame revealed an alternate death scene for Black Widow, which included a showdown with Thanos. In the theatrical release, both Nat and Clint head to Vormir in order to retrieve the Soul Stone, only to realize that one of them would need to kill themselves. Speaking to Business Insider though, editors Jeffery Ford and Matthew Schmidt discussed a few of the scenes that didn’t make the final three-hour cut, which included a showdown with Thanos.
“On script and what we first shot was an excellent scene. Thanos and his soldiers show up on Vormir and a small battle ensues between them and Natasha and Clint. Natasha decides to run off the cliff. Clint tries to stop her while also fending off the attack.”
Fans might remember that in reality, Black Widow and Hawkeye fought each other while trying to jump off the cliff. In the end, Nat was the one who fell to her demise. As Schmidt explains, the original scene tested well with viewers, but it was ultimately changed in order to highlight the relationship between the two Avengers.
“It was reshot to make it more intimate between Clint and Natasha, which fully worked in the end version of the movie. We just came up with a better idea, something that serviced Natasha a little bit more.”
Either way, it looks like the creative team behind Avengers: Endgame intended for Black Widow to die all along. Would you have preferred the deleted scene though, or were you happy with the theatrical version? Let us know in the comments section below!
