At its core, Allied may be a WWII thriller revolving around themes of espionage, subterfuge and flat-out mutiny, but to trumpet the movie’s release, Paramount Pictures has blown the lid off Robert Zemeckis’ starry thriller with a hoard of clips, TV spots and high-res stills showcasing the film’s leading cast.
At the forefront of that ensemble are Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard, who headline Allied as Max Vatan and Marianne Beausejour, a French Resistance fighter, respectively. Assigned to a top-secret mission in North Africa – Casablanca, to be exact – during the throes of World War II, Pitt and Cotillard’s duelling spies strike up an intense romance behind enemy lines.
Their seemingly perfect relationship is put to the sword, however, upon reuniting in London, where accusations are levelled against Cotillard’s Marianne for double-crossing. There are many more story details scattered throughout the deluge of TV spots and clips below, so if you’re hoping to go into Allied with a relatively blank slate, avoid at all costs. Lizzy Caplan, Matthew Goode and Jared Harris round out the cast for this one.
Allied bows in theaters today, November 23. Alas, despite the calibre attached – Pitt, Cotillard and Robert Zemeckis make for quite the formidable lineup on paper – our review found the wartime thriller to be rather unremarkable, a “prestige drama without the prestige, wooden in appearance and lacking any true drama.”
Allied is the story of intelligence officer Max Vatan (Pitt), who in 1942 North Africa encounters French Resistance fighter Marianne Beausejour (Cotillard) on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Reunited in London, their relationship is threatened by the extreme pressures of the war.
