Aside from knowing that Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn was a lock for the upcoming Birds of Prey movie, more details regarding the girl gang flick’s plot are slowly being divulged. Last month, for instance, we finally learned which other characters will be invited to the party, something we’ll reiterate before proceeding.
As you may have heard, in addition to the (perhaps soon to be former) Clown Princess of Crime, the onscreen iteration of the cult favorite team to be featured in Cathy Yan’s epic will be rounded out by the likes of Black Canary, Huntress and Rene Montoya. Seeing as how everyone was expecting Barbara Gordon, a Birds of Prey staple, in some fashion, her exclusion raised more than a few eyebrows. Then again, Hollywood isn’t exactly known for its comic book fidelity.
At the risk of sounding redundant, we won’t recount the story points thus far circulating, but will instead offer up this synopsis which the the folks at Discussing Film have gotten their hands on:
“After splitting up with The Joker, Harley Quinn and three other female superheroes – Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya – come together to save the life of a little girl (Cassandra Cain) from an evil crime lord.”
Now, the reason why we waited until that moment to list those specifics is because this has been the word on the street for the past few weeks. That said, given how everyone’s getting their mitts on the same information, it’s probably safe to say there’s no longer much room for debate when it comes to the basics.
Let it also be known that Black Mask was just revealed to be the villain of the piece, so we’d hazard a guess that he’s the “evil crime lord” in question. Underworld bosses in Gotham City are seldom more ruthless and sadistic than Roman Sionis, so the gals will really have their work cut out for them once the adventure begins.
Right now, Birds of Prey lacks a concrete release date, but 2020 seems to be the most likely year it’ll drop. As always, keep watching this space for more.
