While Comic-Con audiences were last weekend treated to a visually lush trailer for Pan and a clip showcasing Hugh Jackman’s hammy performance as Blackbeard in the Joe Wright-directed blockbuster, neither preview has surfaced online yet. Today, though, Warner Bros. has unveiled an extended look at the October pic, heavy on both fantasy and exposition.
This time around, Levi Miller portrays the titular Boy Who Never Grew Up, whose miserable life in a London orphanage is upended when he (and others) are captured and enslaved by the villainous pirate Blackbeard (Jackman), who spirits them away to Neverland in the belly of a flying pirate ship. There, Peter begins to realize that he may hold the key to breaking Blackbeard’s hold over the fantastical island.
The trailer promises visual splendor and imaginative action in equal measure, and given the huge budget Wright had to play with, there’s reason to expect Pan may be one of the most dazzling films of the fall. Whether its changes to the Peter Pan mythos will hold up, though, is a question that has yet to be answered.
Jason Fuchs (Ice Age: Continental Drift, Wonder Woman) penned the script for the pic, which also stars Garrett Hedlund as a young Hook, Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily (now the head of a multi-racial tribe in Neverland), Amanda Seyfried as Mary, Cara Delevingne as a mermaid and Nonso Anozie as Bishop. That’s a pretty strong crew of supporting actors, and with the theatrical spin Wright is sure to put on every frame, Pan is definitely going to be worth checking out this fall.
Pan opens October 9.
