Filming is officially underway on Bradley Cooper’s music drama A Star is Born – and the first photo is here to prove it.
Featuring Cooper, guitar in hand, opposite Lady Gaga (Stefani Germanotta), the image is a raw peek at Warner’s long-gestating picture, which is now well on its way to its September 2018 release. We say long-gestating because, at one point, Hollywood veteran Clint Eastwood was attached at the helm, right around the time when Beyoncé was linked with the title role of Ally, a talented unknown bound for stardom.
Fresh off her show-stopping performance at Coachella 2017, Gaga is arguably the perfect fit for the part, and A Star is Born marks the artist’s first leading role in a major motion picture. Other screen credits include Machete Kills, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For and a recurring role in American Horror Story. Bradley Cooper, incidentally, is also ticking one off the to-do list as he’s set to make his directorial debut, all the while starring opposite Germanotta as Jackson Maine, a country musician whose glory days are firmly behind him. Now tackling alcoholism and a washed-up career, Maine’s desire for the industry is totally reinvigorated thanks to Ally, but when her blistering success begins to emulate his own, things start to get complicated – and fast.
It’s by no means the first time that A Star is Born has graced the big screen, with previous versions featuring Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand in leading roles. Make no mistake, Stefani Germanotta is following in the footsteps of greatness, but after taking the music industry by storm as Gaga, we’re fascinated to see how the artist transitions to film.
A Star is Born, which also features Andrew Dice Clay and Sam Elliott in supporting roles, lights up theaters on September 28th, 2018.
