It speaks volumes about Netflix’s painstakingly transparent attempts to build as many in-house franchises as possible that The Old Guard is already being eyed as a potential trilogy at the very least, even though the second installment hasn’t even been given a release date.
It’s also indicative of the platform’s approach to said blockbusters that even though the opener ended up as one of the 10 most-watched original features in company history, nobody ever talks about it anymore. Sure, it was entertaining while it lasted and featured about as much gnarly action as you’d expect from an R-rated Charlize Theron-fronted comic book adaptation, but it hardly embedded itself in the zeitgeist and refused to let go.
Either way, producer Marc Evans revealed to Variety at the premiere of monotonous Netflix actioner The Mother that he was already looking ahead to The Old Guard 2, all while everyone patiently waits to be reminded the sequel is a thing that exists whenever its premiere is eventually announced.
““There’s an ending to No. 2 that kind of demands a No. 3, which makes me very happy” is what he said, although it’s unclear if he’s talking about an emotional happiness or a blatant cliffhanger that obligates a trilogy-capper if the numbers are strong enough. Either way, it shouldn’t be too long until we find out, considering The Old Guard 2 wrapped shooting September of last year, so post-production should be far enough along that a potential 2023 debut isn’t entirely out of the question.
