J.C. Chandor’s latest effort, A Most Violent Year, has officially entered the awards race. The director’s follow-up to last year’s sorely-underrated Robert Redford drama, All Is Lost, has at last been granted a release date by A24 films. Set to land in select theatres on December 31st with a nationwide roll-out in January 2015, the flick will land in the midst of awards season. With the first teaser trailer now available to devour, it’s not hard to see why the Winter slate was chosen.
Led by Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac, the movie tells the story of an immigrant and his family during one of New York City’s most notoriously crime-ridden years – 1981. Chastain and Isaac play the heads of a lucrative oil business, who are forced to reconcile their hopes for an American Dream come true, with the harsh reality of crime and corruption.
The glorious cinematography in this first glimpse is truly eye-catching. Chandor builds up the tension between the couple, twinned with a palpable sense of doom for the year depicted. Isaac and Chastain appear to give solid performances as the trailer spans the twelve months, split up with title cards to chronicle their descent into the year.
