We’ve had spinoffs dedicated to Batman and the wonderful world of Ninjago, but next year, master builder Emmet Brickowski returns to center stage for The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part. And it looks to be every bit as fun and colorful as the first movie, albeit with an added touch of Mad Max.
Set five years after the events of Warner’s sleeper hit, The Second Part largely revolves around the kidnapping of Elizabeth Banks’ Wildstyle, leaving Emmet (Infinity War star Chris Pratt) with little choice but to journey into space with Will Arnet’s Batman by his side. Gambit actor Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill and Tiffany Haddish are also among the voice cast.
Behind the lens for this one is Shrek Forever After helmer Mike Mitchell, who fills the void left by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, directors of the first LEGO Movie and erstwhile filmmakers of Solo: A Star Wars Story. They still lent a helping hand to The Second Part, mind you, having helped pen the sequel’s script alongside Michelle Morgan and BoJack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg.
Exactly what lies ahead for the LEGO film universe remains to be seen, but we imagine its future largely hinges on the success of Mitchell’s follow-up – or lack thereof. Either way, it’s set for release next February, and is certain to test our master builders like never before. Or so says the official synopsis from Warner Bros.:
It’s been five years since everything was awesome and the citizens are facing a huge new threat: LEGO DUPLO invaders from outer space, wrecking everything faster than they can rebuild. The battle to defeat them and restore harmony to the LEGO universe will take Emmet, Lucy, Batman and their friends to faraway, unexplored worlds, including a strange galaxy where everything is a musical. It will test their courage, creativity and Master Building skills, and reveal just how special they really are.
The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part blasts off into space (and into theaters!) on February 8th, 2019.
