If you were to build a cult classic from the ground up that was required to tick all of the boxes necessary to guarantee everlasting adulation and an enduring legacy, then there’s a high chance it would look a lot like Galaxy Quest.
The fantastic sci-fi comedy was instantly embraced by its target audience and put up onto the highest of pedestals, to the extent it was named as one of the best Star Trek movies ever made in a poll of Star Trek fans, which is a badge of honor that barely even comprehends thinking about.
It also under-performed at the box office to nix any chances of a franchise being born, only for word-of-mouth and home video sales to eventually see it evolve into one of the genre’s most beloved titles of the last 25 years. Then there’s the repeated and unsuccessful attempts to develop additional stories, with the most recent being that long-rumored Galaxy Quest series getting back on the docket at Paramount Plus this past April.
While any continuation without Alan Rickman doesn’t really have a need to exist, we can only hope that if and when it happens, whatever comes next for the gang will be worthy of standing shoulder-to-shoulder with its illustrious predecessor. Until that day comes, though, the OG continues to tear it up on streaming, with FlixPatrol outing Galaxy Quest as one of the top-viewed titles on Paramount Plus around the world.
Do we need a legacy sequel, whether it’s feature-length or episodic? Arguably not, but let’s just hope the ball doesn’t get dropped.
