The Phantom
It hurts us to write anything bad about Billy Zane because he’s Billy Zane, but 1996’s The Phantom had about as much thrill and excitement as a moldy loaf of bread. It looked good – especially Zane as Kit Walker/The Phantom – but that’s where the accolades unfortunately end.
While the film has become a cult classic since its release, it’s more for nostalgia than anything else. There were two or three decent action-packed scenes, but they were stuffed between a lot of air and white noise. Even matchsticks couldn’t keep our eyes open long enough between these far and few high points.
Considering the decorated history of the character, it’s a surprise that The Phantom hasn’t been rebooted yet. If the inevitable does finally happen, however, we hope the new filmmakers make a more electrifying film, at the very least. Do it for Billy Zane, guys and girls!
