The Spirit
Long before Gabriel Macht became Harvey Specter on Suits, he starred as Denny Colt in Frank Miller’s The Spirit. What should’ve become the spiritual (ha-ha) successor to Sin City though became a blotch on the comic book movie medium and a red cross next to Miller’s name.
It might’ve looked pretty in places, but there was nothing else happening around it. While the noir genre can be a slow burn in general, The Spirit failed to ignite at all. The action was fairly limited and the production quickly generated into nothing more than a high-budget student film of aimless shot after aimless shot.
Perhaps it was Miller’s inexperience as a director that ultimately failed this project, but one cannot ignore the lifelessness of it. To make matters even worse, The Spirit was released on Christmas Day in 2008, almost as if it were a gift for us. Honestly, we would’ve preferred receiving dad socks instead.
