1) The Mythology Is All New
In the show, it’s established that Zordon and Rita Repulsa have been waging an eternal battle between good and evil for centuries, with the fate of the whole universe hanging in the balance. This is mostly just backstory, however, and isn’t really explored in Mighty Morphin. In its quest to ground the Power Rangers universe in some sort of reality, the movie looks to be picking up these threads and weaving something new from them.
For instance, the Ranger’s Command Center – which is usually home to Zordon and Alpha – is no longer in an alien-looking building in the mountains but located deeper under the ocean in a great cave. It’s a change that makes a lot more sense considering the backstory. Presumably, Zordon has been buried down there for centuries, waiting for the war with Rita to begin once again.
[zergpaid]The Power Morphers are also organic-looking rocks rather than actual coins held in hi-tech belt buckles. Likewise, though we don’t get a proper look at them in the trailer, we can see that the suits mold themselves around the Rangers. We’re still not sure of the Iron Man-like redesign, but you really get the sense that they’re some ancient alien power.
Old-school Power Rangers fans might rally against these changes, but it has to said they’re just clever embellishments of information that the series gave us, thought through a little more to flesh out the world of the story and make it more complete.
