8 Superhero Movie Crossovers We’d Love To See At Some Point

There's never been a better time to be a comic book movie fan. It’s become a bit of a cliché to say it by now, but that doesn’t make it any less true. As 2016 has made plain, with multiple franchises producing at least two a piece this year, various studios are working towards creating expansive, all-encompassing movie universes that mirror the shared worlds of the comics. Marvel are obviously in the lead with this at the moment, but Fox’s X-Men franchise is finally realizing its potential and DC are quickly playing catch up.

There are literally thousands of comic book characters in both the Marvel and DC pantheons, but only a handful of them have managed to make the jump from the page to the screen. Both companies have their iconic, flagship characters that stand out among the rest; Marvel has Iron Man, Spider-Man and Captain America, while DC's "trinity" of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman are three of the most recognizable characters in fiction. Both power houses also have a fair share of heroes and villains that are remarkably similar, whether in appearance, origin, super powers, or even all of the above. Normally, this would serve as nothing more than a matter of taste on the part of the reader. But as the superhero film genre continues to grow, these characters are beginning to show up on screen at the same time and are starting to run the risk of some audience confusion. So, on that note, here are 14 characters that, despite their differences, are awkwardly similar and may require that we geeks provide some explanation for modern audiences and the uninitiated.

The Crossover: The Marvel vs. DC war rages everyday amongst superhero fans, so naturally, we’d love to see this played out on the big screen for real. We’ve all wondered what would happen if Batman took on Captain America or Hulk smashed Superman, and a Justice League vs. The Avengers movie would finally put those questions to rest. Superhero vs. superhero movies are now in vogue, so there’s no better time to pit the heroes of Marvel and DC against each other.

Likelihood – 1/10: While the companies might enjoy a friendly rivalry on the page and have crossed over several times, things are very different when it comes to movie making. Walt Disney and Warner Bros. (who own Marvel and DC, respectively) are rival studios, so it’s difficult to imagine them ever putting aside their differences in order to make a film together. Which is a sad state of affairs for all involved – including the studios. Surely they must realize how much money a movie like this would make them?
