4) Logan – What Happened To The X-Men
Logan was an example of a superhero film transcending the genre. Taking place in a desolate future where the X-Men have ceased to exist, the movie follows its namesake, who’s become an old, hollow version of himself, painfully moving through life whilst caring for a now-senile Professor Xavier.
Throughout the film, there’s this looming uncomfortable atmosphere regarding what happened to the other X-Men. While some mutants like Logan, Xavier and Caliban are present, many other popular ones like Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Storm have vanished, and their disappearance isn’t really touched on outside of comic books inspired by the group.
That is, until, a loan broadcast plays on the radio while Logan is escaping from the casino following Xavier’s seizure there. During it, the host reveals that there was similar incident in the Westchester area of the country that resulted in many people dying, including some members of the X-Men.
It was a startling twist as it revealed that it wasn’t Logan who was responsible for what happened, but Xavier instead, prompting them to go into hiding. Of course, this doesn’t cover what killed off all the X-Men, but it does give an idea for future films to build upon.
