1. Back To The Future (1985)
You probably guessed it, but how could any other movie besides Back to the Future top our list of time-travelling adventures? There was just no way anything could possibly end up beating Marty and Doc from the top spot – even though Terminator 2 did have us deliberating for a brief moment or two.
But we think you’ll agree that the film (and the equally entertaining sequel – the third not so much) reigns triumphant above all others in the genre. Why? Well, because it’s just so much fun. It stands as testament to the longevity and quality of Robert Zemeckis’ sci-fi classic that it’s maintained a devoted fan base for the best part of thirty years- and that’s partly down to just how entertaining and likeable it is as a film. In Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) we have a protagonist who’s relatable, funny and one we can really get behind. Juxtapose this with the eccentric oddball scientist, Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd), and Back to the Future defines itself with a dynamic and eternal character pairing.
You all probably know the story – Marty ends up using Doc Brown’s DeLorean-come-time machine to travel back to 1955 and inadvertently almost erases himself from existence. The only way Marty can stop this is to find Doc in the past and repair the time machine, and to make sure his parents are caught in cupid’s gaze – while fending off advances from his smitten mother. Weird, right?
Nevertheless, this is one of those movies you sit down and watch whenever it’s on the television. As iconic as it is enthralling, Back to the Future continues to strike a chord with new and old-time fans. From scenes like the Johnny B. Goode rendition, to Marty outsmarting Biff with a skateboard and manure, it’s a sure-fire classic that still holds up just as well today.
