3) Desk Set
If 9 to 5 has female bonding take on the corporate culture, Desk Set reminds us of how much fun office friendships can be.
Kate Hepburn is Bunny Watson, the head of the reference department at a media outlet, where she and her gang of three women field questions about everything from the names of Santa’s reindeer to the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow.
[zergpaid]When Richard Sumner (Spencer Tracy) appears, the women think they are due to be replaced by a computer that he designed, so they go on an epic tear to prove just how essential their expertise truly is.
There’s so much fun to be had in Desk Set that it’s almost impossible to distill it down to two paragraphs. Best of the bunch, though, is the hilarious and extended Christmas party where Hepburn’s Bunny and Joan Blondell’s Peg get drunk on champagne and giggle their way through a very realistic binge.
As a celebration of smart, funny women, it doesn’t get much better than this.
