2) How To Marry A Millionaire
While How to Marry a Millionaire might sound like a bad 1950s self-help book, it’s actually a charming comedy about three women in New York who set their sights on marrying men with money.
Lauren Bacall, Betty Grable, and Marilyn Monroe are the ladies in question who rent a penthouse apartment together in an effort to attract rich men. Far from being gold-diggers, these are women who just want to get on solid footing, rather than spending their lives being chased around by men who don’t want to give them anything in return.
As dated and mercenary as the film appears to be, How To Marry A Millionaire is saved by the charm and humor of the three leading ladies, and some very deft plot twists that keep the viewer interested.
Supportive of one another, eccentric, and very funny, the three make what would otherwise be an unpalatable plot into something charming and slightly caustic, a gentle 1950s commentary on what it means to marry for money.
