5 Things We Learnt At The Valerian SDCC Panel

In an alternate universe, where time-travel is real, I wish I could go back and warn myself of something that I absolutely underestimated: the excitement I would feel for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Sure, prior to attending the Hall H panel for the upcoming sci-fi flick I was certainly curious about it, but after walking away from my seat I was absolutely blown away and shivering with excitement.

When they brought Cara Delevingne and Dane DeHaan out during the panel to talk to fans, moderator Josh Horowitz asked about Rihanna’s cameo in the film, since we were given a glimpse of her and Ethan Hawke’s character in the footage.

DeHaan told us that “Rihanna’s part is so crazy.” He revealed that his first two weeks on set were with her and said, “you don’t even know what to expect. When I told everyone what we were doing, their jaws were on the floor. They were so jealous. But, that’s all I can say about it.” .

3) James Cameron Invited Luc Besson To The Set Of Avatar

At one point in the panel, Besson took a moment to thank his friend and fellow director James Cameron for a couple of things. First, we learned that Besson had written a script for Valerian long ago and had it ready to go for when the time was right. Well, that was until he saw Avatar, which made him throw his “script in the garbage” and start over.

After telling the crowd this, he then extended even more thanks to “Jim” for inviting him to the set of Avatar and sharing the technologies that he was using for for the film, taking the time to show him just how much goes into creating a massive sci-fi world.
