5 Comic Book Characters Who Were Poorly Recast

Unfortunately, the number one spot takes yet another swipe at the world of Batman, but at least the Dark Knight is finally safe from the line of fire. Catwoman may be one of the more complex female characters of the DC comics, but the dream team of Burton and Michelle Pfeiffer proved that Selina Kyle could translate successfully to the big screen. So, what did Warner Bros. do? Let a spin-off languish in development hell for over a decade before eschewing Pfeiffer’s Kyle in favor of a new character who was Catwoman only in name.

The Catwoman movie could have been incredible. The original character of Selina Kyle has been a fan favorite for decades and the casting of Halle Berry should have paved the way for more diversity in superhero blockbusters, but instead, this car crash of a movie was so bad that it’s not even fun to laugh at. Bad writing, bad direction, even a bad costume all added up to a movie that was somehow even worse than the sum of its parts. However, not all the blame can be placed on director Pitof’s shoulders.

Berry’s ridiculous over-acting and extreme feline mannerisms belong in a superhero parody, not in an actual movie that was apparently designed to be taken seriously. Admirably though, Berry herself recognized that Catwoman was not exactly her strongest role, even turning up in person to accept the Razzie for Worst Actress at the infamous award ceremony.

“I’d like to thank the rest of the cast,” Berry stated in her speech. “To give a really bad performance like mine, you need to have really bad actors.”

While Berry’s acceptance speech was admittedly brilliant and helped restore some of her credit in the public eye, the whole thing would have been unnecessary if she had just used half the effort she put into this speech into her actual acting instead. Again, hindsight is a wonderful thing…
