The actors have assembled, the director is set, and now Universal has officially greenlit the new 3D epic 47 Ronin. Directed by Carl Rinsch, who is making his feature debut, the martial arts fantasy adventure stars Keanu Reeves, Hiroyuki Sanada, Kou Shibasaki, Tandanobu Asano, and Rinko Kukuchi.
Filming one of Japan’s most enduring tale begins March 14th in London with Reeves leading the cast as Kai, an outcast who joins Oishi (Sanada), the leader of 47 Ronin. Together along with others who have been banished they seek vengence on the vicious overlord who killed their master and banished their kind. They will embark on a quest that challeges them through a series of trials that would normally destroy normal class warriors. Inspired by styles as diverse as Miyazaki and Hokusai, Rinsch will bring to life the stunning landscapes and enormous battles that will display the timeless Ronin story to global audiences in a way that’s never been seen before.
Chris Morgan (Wanted, Fast Five) and Hossein Amini (Drive) wrote the screenplay and Scrott Stuber (The Kingdom), Pamela Abdy (Garden State) and Eric McLeod (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End, Tropic Thunder) will produce the epic.
It is still unkwown if Rinsch will use actual locations or green screens, but if he can pull off the 3D aspects, you can be sure that this film will be an epic.
