10 Reasons Why Marvel’s Netflix Shows Are Actually Better Than Their Movies

With a release date for The Punisher finally confirmed (it drops next month), it's clear that the slew of Netflix superhero series are keen to maintain the momentum that's been building since April 2015. Ever since Daredevil launched Marvel's run of small screen adventures via the streaming service, we've never had to wait too long to revisit the New York stories. The Defenders closed several long-running chapters when it debuted in August and now, the aforementioned spinoff will pick things up in November.

As we approach a decade with the franchise, we’re still yet to see the movies introduce something that the Netflix shows did early on: a truly great female hero. This shouldn’t be difficult when you consider the myriad of great ones that exist in Marvel comic book lore, but still it remains a huge problem with those movies. In large part this is due to the decision not to embed a female-led film into the first Phases of the cinematic universe.

Marvel’s streamed series made no such mistake. In Jessica Jones we were treated to a titular hero who’s both inspiring and infuriating in equal measure. A desire to be left unbothered is at constant war with a desire to help those in dire need. This conflict makes Jones accessible on a human level and her journey to becoming the hero her abilities make her capable of is a compelling one. None of this has been achieved with the likes of Black Widow or Scarlet Witch thus far.

We can hope that Captain Marvel, slated for a 2019 release and with Brie Larson in the title role, will fix this. For now, however, at least we have the comfort of knowing that season 2 of Jessica Jones isn’t that far away!
