4) Show That Peter Really Understands His Responsibility
Stopping just short of having Tony Stark step into the shoes of the already-deceased Uncle Ben, Spider-Man: Homecoming finds alternative ways to teach Pete some rough life lessons. The most on-the-nose of these is the exchange between the two after Parker has botched his ferry rescue, with Stark cautioning the youngster against being so brash in future.
Peter quite clearly reassess his approach and his methods after this, but the lesson he learns is nowhere near as harsh as some that his comic counterpart has been through. With comic book storylines like the “No One Dies” saga, Peter is constantly beset by tragedy. Part of what makes the character such an inspirational hero is his ability to cope with this and to redouble his efforts to become better.
The failures at the ferry did bring some of this into the movie, but Peter’s ultimate showdown with The Vulture lacked the fraught to make it feel anything more than a formality. As the hero grows through the series, we certainly need to see that he truly does appreciate the responsibility that must also come with his great power…
