9) Focus The Story On Characters We’ve Already Seen
Spanning more than fifty years of comic stories, Spider-Man has a rich and vast collection of enemies to choose from. Some of which (all the Goblins!) we’ve already seen far too much of on screen, whereas others were so poorly deployed that they really shouldn’t get a second chance for a while.
Rather than scour Spidey’s gallery of rogues, then, it makes perfect sense to capitalize on the unexpected reveal that hit such a great beat in the first movie. The introduction of Mac Gargan would have been exciting for comic fans, many of whom have been crying out for The Scorpion to feature in a film for years. His subsequent incarceration at the hands of the Wall-Crawler gives him motivation, so now all he needs are the means.
However Gargan ends up becoming The Scorpion for the sequel (and we’ll have a little more on that later), Marvel Studios would be stupid not to call on him. A vicious foe specifically designed to prey on the spider, Scorpion would add a dimension of danger that was lacking for Pete against The Vulture. Seeing Spider-Man face off against someone so ruthless would make for some truly excellent battles, the likes of which should have been on offer when Marc Webb brought The Lizard to The Amazing Spider-Man back in 2012.
