If you’re not sick of comic book movies yet, you might be soon. Sometime around the launch of Batman Begins and Superman Returns, screenwriter David S. Goyer, who by then had built a reputation for being the go-to guy for comic book movie scripts, penned with Justin Marks a spec script called Super Max.

So it’s a jail movie? Yes, and its star was to be Green Arrow. Long before Stephen Amell suited up weekly in green leather for Arrow, Goyer and Marks dreamed up a live action big screen adventure for the Emerald Archer, one with a unique concept and a chance for dozens of those beloved Easter eggs that capture fan’s imaginations.

The plot for Super Max would have followed the Arrow as he’s framed for a crime he didn’t commit and sent to the titular prison where a lot of the biggest goons of the DC Universe are cooling their heels, including Lex Luthor and the Joker. Once inside, Green Arrow must try to escape, clear his name, and stay alive against a gaggle of villains who all have a reason to kill the superhero.

If this sounds awesome to you, you’re not alone. There was a tremendous amount of enthusiasm for Super Max when it was announced in 2008, and although it’s never been officially categorized as “dead,” it seems like no one is exactly willing to put it into production, either.
