Whatever possessed Disney execs to greenlight a cartoon version of Victor Hugo’s 19th century gothic tome about a deformed bellringer is anyone’s guess, but it naturally resulted in one of the darkest movies ever produced by the studio. Don’t let the image above fool you, the film actually features racial persecution, religious extremism and the word ‘hell’ lots and lots of times.
[zergpaid]Hunchback has been swept under the carpet ever since but, who knows, it might be time to put the story back in the limelight. It stuck out like a sore thumb in the 90s but, with the studio making more thematically mature movies nowadays, a new Hunchback could possibly be an effective venture for them.
