1) Treasure Planet
Aside from redoing old failures, Disney’s remake system could be used to champion a forgotten treasure from their past. And when talking about Disney’s hidden gems, 2002’s Treasure Planet immediately comes to mind.
This sci-fi take on Robert Louis Stevenson’s pirate classic Treasure Island was directed by Disney hit-makers Ron Clements and John Musker (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules) but sadly failed to take off. We’ve no idea why, as it sports gorgeous visuals, a fun action/adventure story and a touching yet complex relationship between Jim Hawkins and the cyborg John Silver.
A live-action remake could bring the critical acclaim and wider audience that this terrific premise – pirate ships in space! – deserved in the first place. Treasure Planet also employed pioneering CGI animation, so a live-action take could show off the leaps forward in that field since its initial release.
