What’s With The Xbox One And Its Randomly Disconnecting Controllers?

Being an early adopter of any kind of new technology comes with risks of defects and glitches. We all know that, and we live with it when we make such purchases out of either necessity or want and interest. However, there's no denying that such issues can be incredibly frustrating - if that's even a strong enough word.

After six months, what I thought was a defective controller went back to the store and was exchanged. That controller unfortunately had a broken button, so it went back, too, so the one I’m using is now my third. Actually, the console is also the third one I’ve reviewed with. Microsoft has shipped us two brand new replacements through its exchange program, and that hasn’t solved the issue, either. In fact, the controller just disconnected last night while I was reviewing Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor.

People on the Xbox Forums are speculating that this may have something to do with the September controller update that Microsoft recently released over Xbox Live, but it’s not exclusive to that. Sure, it seems like quite a few gamers started having the issue after downloading that specific file, but the problem goes way back to last November, or Day One if you will. It hasn’t been fixed in a year, and when you talk to Microsoft support about it, they can’t fix it. They promise you a fix, but then their fix ends up being a waste of time.

The good news is that an official Microsoft representative has commented on said forum, to let everyone know that engineers are aware of the issue and are working on it. Hopefully they’ll find a way to fix it soon because it’s starting to get beyond frustrating and is driving a lot of other people mad, too.

If anyone from Microsoft is reading this, I ask that they make fixing this controller de-sync problem a top priority, because it can’t keep happening. It’s going to drive people away from the Xbox One, and that’s something none of us want to happen. Heck, I was even ready to buy a new controller, but have held off on doing so until things are resolved.
