Last month at Gamescom Microsoft attempted to narrow the price gap between the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 by announcing that “all pre-orders” of their upcoming next-gen console in Europe would come with a code to download a free copy of FIFA 14. The platform holder has now clarified the offer, revealing that the codes will only be included in the limited “Day One Edition” pre-orders.
Xbox Europe’s social marketing manager, Graeme Boyd, made the announcement on his Twitter account in the following set of exchanges:
Had a few questions on this so wanted to clarify: FIFA 14 will only come free with Xbox One Day One Edition pre-orders, while stocks last.

@brownmurder That’s incorrect. Day One Editions only. I’ve let the team on that Twitter account know.

@jar_ink Check with your retailer – unless it’s a Day One Edition you are not eligible for FIFA 14. You might be able to swap?

It is unclear if the free FIFA 14 offer for all Xbox One pre-orders was a mistake, or if Microsoft and EA altered the deal after the announcement was made. In either case, Boyd has made it clear that the free download code is only included with Day One Edition pre-orders.
