As a nice little Boxing Day surprise, Nintendo announced today that Zelda will return as a playable character in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U and 3DS.
Zelda’s Super Smash Bros. roster confirmation came via an update to the game’s official website, which included several screenshots of her in action. Based on those stills, it appears that Nintendo has chosen to go with a Twilight Princess-styled character model for Hyrule’s princess.
Perhaps the most interesting screenshot of Zelda makes it appear as if she is controlling a Phantom Knight from the DS game Spirit Tracks. At this point, it is unclear if the Phantom Knight is an Assist Trophy (similar to Skull Kid) or a standard part of Zelda’s move set. We are personally hoping that the heavy armor is linked directly to Zelda, but it seems like a cool addition in either case.
With Zelda’s confirmation, the roster for Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS currently stands at the following twenty characters; Zelda (Twilight Princess) Rosalina & Luma (Super Mario Galaxy), Marth (Fire Emblem), Sonic, Toon Link (Wind Waker), Peach, Luigi, Pikmin & Olimar, Villager (Animal Crossing), Mega Man, Wii Fit Trainer, Mario, Donkey Kong, Link (Twilight Princess), Samus, Kirby, Fox (Star Fox), Pikachu, Bowser, and Pit (Kid Icarus).
