Like the desperate, terrified teenagers you play as, Friday the 13th: The Game was brutally cut down in its prime. The project ended up the victim of a monster far more terrifying and vicious than anything the supernatural could conjure up: lawyers. Yup, the entire franchise is currently caught in a legal quagmire after Victor Miller, writer of the script for the original Friday the 13th launched a legal action attempting to terminate a grant of rights and reclaim ownership of the brand.
This means that the immensely popular video game developed by Gun Media, which has proved to be a huge hit on Twitch, has had to have its DLC plans curtailed. In a statement released a few weeks ago, the company said:
“We’ve now been forced to accept that the lawsuit makes future content for the game, including alternate play modes, new playable Jasons and Counselors, and new maps, unfeasible now or in the future.
The entirely understandable decision means that we’re not getting Uber Jason, the Grendel Map, a fresh and gory Jason Kill Pack, new clothing, new emotes and new counsellors to slice and dice. But it’s not quite over for the game, as Gun Media have just announced the Ultimate Slasher Collector’s Edition, which bundles together all previously released DLC and retailer exclusive content, as well as a limited edition poster and an authentic NECA replica Jason mask from Friday the 13th Part III.
Presumably, that last item is a hint that while the game might be coming to an end, players can still live out their happy Jason memories by menacing teenagers for real (please don’t actually do this). It’s a hell of a package, and it releases for Playstation 4 and Xbox One on September 4th (pre-order here).
