It is “looking fantastic,” set for a multi-platform release and now, developer Respawn has confirmed that Titanfall 2 will include a single-player campaign, a feature that was totally absent from the original 2014 release.
That’s according to the sequel’s Lead Writer Jesse Stern, who spoke about the “vision of grand global colonial warfare” that will underpin Titanfall 2 during an interview with Forbes. Firstly, Stern noted that the multiplayer component of the follow-up will be a step up from its predecessor, before acknowledging that the lack of a single-player story was perhaps one of the shortcomings of Titanfall two years ago.
“The multi-player game will be even better than it was the first time around. The first game was an Xbox exclusive (initially). This one is going to be widely available, I believe on all platforms. One of the shortcomings of the first game was we just did not have the mechanism to tell everyone ‘here’s who you are, here’s where you are and who’s around you.’ We knew all the answers, we just could not deliver it. So we are doing our best to deliver a vision of grand global colonial warfare, retelling the story of the American Revolution and the American Civil War in space. We imagined the next generation of immigrants moving out to the new frontier of an inhabitable planet.”
While the original game incorporated story beats into the multiplayer campaign, there’s an awful lot of potential for the team at Respawn to build bona fide single-player campaign. Further in the piece, Stern hinted at the ways in which the Titanfall universe can differentiate itself from standard genre themes of space colonization and the like.
“What inspires us is the junction of technological advancement with the inevitability of conflict and war and what the next war might look like. In Titanfall 2 there will be a lot of [scenes] where science meets magic, but keeping it grounded and dirty and human and real.”
Titanfall 2 is currently incubating in development, likely for PS4, Xbox One and PC. A recent EA earnings call pegged the sequel for a release before March 2017, meaning that an announcement in and around E3 or Gamescom seems all but certain.
