Speaking during a recent financial call, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick revealed that the publisher is not anticipating a huge increase in game development costs for next generation consoles.
Specifically, Zelnick told investors:
“We don’t have a ramp-up of operating expenses for next-generation… Do we believe that titles to be a whole lot more expensive to make for next-gen? The answer is we do not. In many instances we believe that it may be somewhat easier to make titles for next-gen depending on how the technology comes together.”
Historically the transition to next generation consoles has brought with it higher costs to develop software for the new technology. This was especially true with the jump to HD in the current-gen, that ended up squeezing many mid-tier studios completely out of existence when game sales didn’t keep pace with the higher investment costs.
With the recent speculation that the PS4 and Xbox 720 will come with expensive new tech, and a correspondingly high price tag, it is nice to hear that there won’t necessarily be a price hike for the games as well.
