You know that game Amplitude Studios is working on? Yea – it’s called Dungeon of the Endless, right? Wrong! Well, both actually – though that game is coming, Amplitude has revealed it is also working on a fantasy 4X strategy game due out this Spring called Endless Legend. Huh, multitasking indies – I like it.
The team at Amplitude seems pretty stoked about the game considering the crushing amount of work doubling up on development must be, and their CEO Mathieu Girard wears the teams’ emotions right on his sleeve.
Creating a fantasy 4X game was a dream for all of us at Amplitude. The success of Endless Space and the support of our community have allowed to make this dream come true. With respect toward great games released before us, we intend to set a new benchmark in creating a rich, immersive, thrilling, and accessible 4X strategy game in a new fantasy setting.
Nice! The fantasy setting will indeed be a change of pace, as Amplitude’s previous 4X game Endless Space took place on a farm in South Dakota. Oh, sorry, we’re getting some new information in — it actually took place in space. Like outer space. Sorry for the mix-up.
Civilization V and the 4X mode in Star Wars: Battlefront II are my only real 4X experience, so I took it upon myself to peruse Amplitude’s press release and find out what’s up. As always, the ‘4’ represents the actions of exploration, expansion, exploitation, and extermination, and mastering them will be essential if you want to build an empire worth its salt. Not only do you just exterminate in the game, either; you get to “exterminate fools who defy you.” Muaha! I am definitely liking the sound of this.
Amplitude has also released some nice screenshots for the game, which can be seen above and below. Personally I dig the art style – it’s colorful when it needs to be, and the DSLR-style foreground and background blur is a nice touch. Whether Amplitude can pull off two great games at once remains to be seen, but their gung-ho attitude is definitely something I wouldn’t mind seeing out of more developers. Endless Legend should be here by Spring 2014, so keep it on your radar if the number of fools defying you has reached its breaking point.
