Steam Sale Day 10: Pirates And Dungeons And Assassins

Yet another day, yet more sales. As always, if it's not a Daily Deal, it's worth holding off to see if it'll be one. If you buy it now, it will be on sale tomorrow, that's just the way these things work.

Yet another day, yet more sales. As always, if it’s not a Daily Deal, it’s worth holding off to see if it’ll be one. If you buy it now, it will be on sale tomorrow, that’s just the way these things work.

Section 8: Prejudice – $3.74 – Section 8 combines the best parts of the Battlefield and Tribes series to make this team play FPS oriented stand out.  The single player is all but forgettable, but the multiplayer makes up for that with the sheer chaos it provides.  The major downside to this title is the small community, but you have to think that a sale like this can help boost it.

Serious Sam 3:BFE – $19.99 – It’s no secret that I’ve got some serious (Ed note: Let’s not do this again…)love for the Serious Sam series, and anyone who’s fired them up can tell why.  Why the game may be lacking on plot a bit, however the utter joy that comes with blowing up Godzilla-esque monsters with a portable cannon does well to make you forget that.  It is an oldschool shooter at heart with no cover system, no regenerating health and an insane amount of guns, and it makes me smile every time.

Two Worlds II – $13.59 – Two Worlds II never quite got the respect it deserved thanks to the original title.  Two Worlds 1 was quite possibly one of the worst final releases I’ve seen with this generation, and was an outright joke.  Two Worlds II aimed to rectify this, and while it made some great changes it just never stepped fully out of that shadow.  The story itself is rather bland, but the crafting system and sarcastic overtones give the game a certain charm.  Be aware, the current DRM only allows three activations.

Dead Space 1 and 2 – $4.99 – The Dead Space series has tried to reinvent survival horror for the new generation, and it’s done a decent job.  Sure, some of the scares are right out of every horror film you may have ever seen , but the atmosphere is fantastic.  The first game is a pretty shoddy port, and the second title was outstanding up to the last 15 minutes.  If you want TRUE horror on your PC, get Amnesia or Penumbra, but if you’re looking for something a bit more arcade in its horror this is a fine title.

Assassin’s Creed Franchise – $4.99-$37.59  – Assassin’s Creed reinvented the stealth action games and is quickly becoming a favorite series of mine.  The main question here is if the last two games in the series are worth buying into.  Well, yes and no.  They don’t feel like full-fledged sequels, but the multiplayer introduced in Brotherhood was unlike anything I had really played before and I lost a lot of hours to it.  If you’re a fan of the series, or even if you’re new and looking for a place to dive in Revelations is a great title, but it may not be enough for the casual fan to get their full money’s worth.

Homefront – $7.50 – What else can be said about Homefront other than then fact the we labeled it the most disappointing game of the year.  The premise for the game is outright outstanding by lazy design mars this to the point where I can’t justify picking it up for anyone really.  I’ve heard the multiplayer is ok all things considered, but there’s not much here to win you over.

Machinarium – $2.50 – Machinarium is one of the greatest adventure games of all time.  The puzzles are outstanding, the overall aesthetic is downright pleasing and the soundtrack is gorgeous.  The only major caveat I can see is the minigames which can be a bit jarring,  however that’s no excuse to not pick this title up.

Hearts Of Iron 3 – $7.50 – Hearts of Iron may be the most intense strategy game I’ve ever encountered.  There is a an absolute wealth of things going on, and due to that the learning curve is insanely steep.  If you’ve got the time to dive into this game and explore what it has to offer you’ll be rewarded, but newcomers could be pushed away.

Tomb Raider Franchise – $2.50 -4.99 – It’s hard to believe that I actually have to pluralize decades when talking about the Tomb Raider franchise now, but the titles have earned their place.  Anniversary is worth looking into as it’s essentially a remake of the first title with some upgrades, and does a great job of reminding us why Tomb Raider has stuck around so long

Dungeon Defenders – $3.74 – If you only get one game today, this is by far the best buy.  A multiplayer co op action tower defense with tons of loot and an amazing aesthetic Dungeon Defenders stands out as one of the best titles of the year regardless of price.  Add in the fact that there is a steady stream of quality DLC and it’s hard to imagine getting tired of this any time soon.  This is easily the steal of the day.

Revenge Of The Titans – $2.50 – Staying on the tower defense genre, Revenge Of The Titans is a more traditional title with a few changes.  The main one is that instead of blindly running past your towers to their death, enemies will target your defenses and try to take them down adding a sense of panic I haven’t experienced in a traditional tower defense game.  While I don’t think it has the replayability of Dungeon Defenders, it’s a quality title worth looking into

Space Pirates and Zombies – $2.50 – S.P.A.Z. is a hybrid of a top down shooter and a strategy title.  Normally I wouldn’t expect something like that to work out, but this ends up being a pretty fun game.  I will warn you, the first bit is extremely slow and the combat seems forced, but it opens up as you go into a fun title.
