Now that the Rogue One: Scarif DLC is available to Season Pass holders – expect the add-on to debut for all players on December 20 – developer DICE has reflected on the past, present and potential future of the rebooted Star Wars Battlefront series.
Chatting to Eurogamer, the studio’s producer Paul Keslin began by addressing the shooter’s mixed reception. When Battlefront touched down for consoles and PC late last year, early adopters bemoaned the lack of single-player campaign, with the general consensus being that DICE’s licensed title was a textbook example of style over substance. That being said, Keslin stressed that the developer has been keeping one ear to the ground ever since, and has spent the past 12 months introducing new content and gameplay mechanics to further enhance the experience.
Per Eurogamer:
“We’ve been listening to a lot of the feedback since launch and even post-launch as we’ve been adding new things. We’ve announced the next game that’s coming out – those are things we’re look to tackle in the future. We can’t always get everything in the current game, but in the future we want to hit those things and give the fans what they’re after.”
When quizzed about Star Wars Battlefront 2, Keslin was understandably coy, but did tease that the possibility for a seamless transition between land to air combat isn’t necessarily off the table.
“That’s something I don’t know currently. We’re getting there with some things – it really depends on how giant the world is what some of our goals are. Some of the limitations are that there’s a lot of stuff to throw on-screen. We’re trying to lock everything into 60fps, with all this water and vegetation – since our game is so visually authentic, it’s very taxing. I can’t speak right now for what the team might be working on, what that might look like in a seamless world. I can say we haven’t focused on that as of yet. But maybe!”
Star Wars Battlefront‘s Rogue One: Scarif DLC is available now for Season Pass holders. You’ll also be able to pick up DICE’s movie tie-in early via Battlefront‘s Ultimate Edition, otherwise you can wait until it launches for all users on December 20. Meanwhile, the studio is already ramping up production on the inevitable sequel, which is currently on course to land in fall 2017.
