Electronic Arts has long made it clear that the focus of Star Wars Battlefront was to nail the “core multiplayer experience,” and it’s hard to argue that EA and DICE failed to deliver.
But for all of the praise directed at DICE’s Battlefront reboot, many lamented the lack of content and, in particular, the decision to forego a single-player campaign altogether. Thankfully, the Swedish dev has been keeping one ear to the ground, and plans are already in place to deliver a Star Wars Battlefront 2 that is not only “much bigger” and “more ambitious” than its predecessor, but one that will also expand the focus beyond the multiplayer realm.
With a holiday 2017 release fast approaching, DICE has called upon the help of Criterion and Motive, two fellow EA studios assisting on the sequel’s development. Touting an “all-new single-player campaign,” EA head honcho Andrew Wilson offered up some tantalizing new details for Star Wars Battlefront 2 during the publisher’s recent earnings call, stating:
“Our next Star Wars Battlefront will be even bigger, taking players into more locations and allowing them to play with more heroes and characters across multiple Star Wars eras. There will be new ways to play, including an all-new single-player campaign and much, much more that we are excited to share with our players in the months ahead.”
A story mode is officially locked in, praise the heavens, but the fact that Wilson alludes to “more heroes and characters across multiple Star Wars eras” indicates that DICE, Criterion and Motive may well factor in Disney’s new line of movies, something that has long been on the cards.

So, there you have it; Star Wars Battlefront 2 launches holiday 2017 with a full-fledged story mode to boot. It’s one of many licensed Star Wars titles brewing over at Electronic Arts, given the publisher has also ordered a third-person title from Dead Space dev Visceral Games and an all-new experience from Respawn, the studio best known for the Titanfall series. That iconic galaxy far, far away is about to become a crowded one.
