Sony has finally confirmed what has been rumored for some time now, as the company revealed a VR peripheral for the PlayStation 4. The news was announced during the Future Of Innovation talk at GDC earlier today.
Dubbed Project Morpheus, the current prototype for the headset sports a sleek white look and is the culmination of several years of development. Upon launch, the device will be compatible with the PlayStation Camera and PlayStation Move.
Although the headset on display at GDC is only a prototype, Sony also revealed some tentative specs for Project Morpheus. It will feature a 1080p display with a 90-degree field of view, 1000hz display, full 360-degree movement, 15mm eye relief, and will support forward prediction. All in all, it’s a pretty impressive piece of tech.
While learning about the technology is all well and good, I would assume that most gamers are interested in which titles will feature Project Morpheus support. What’s been announced so far is EVE Valkyrie, the multiplayer shooter that will also launch for fellow VR headset Oculus Rift, a special build of Thief that features a smattering of levels supporting the headset, The Deep, an underwater exploration sim, and The Castle, which will also feature sword swinging action via the PlayStation Move.
Sony has yet to reveal pricing or release date details for Project Morpheus but the headset will be available for a hands-on with developers and press tomorrow at GDC.
We’ll keep you posted when more news on Sony’s exciting new device becomes available.
