Hearing that Polyphony Digital is working on Gran Turismo 6 is not all that surprising, as most of us have assumed that the developer started work on the title shortly after Gran Turismo 5 launched back in November 2010. What is a bit surprising, is that a Sony executive seems to have let it slip that the game is actually in development for the PlayStation 3, and not the recently announced PlayStation 4.
In a new interview with Silicon Republic, Sony Worldwide Studios senior vice-president Michael Deeny was talking about the upcoming PlayStation 3 lineup and casually tossed Gran Turismo 6 into the mix. Deeny’s exact statement reads:
“Look at the games coming out on the PlayStation 3 like The Last of Us, Beyond: Two Souls, GT6, and then on the third-party side of things another fantastic Assassin’s Creed, GTA… It’s important for our content to have that kind of longevity because, as I was saying [about the PS Vita], the games that come through are going to get better and better over time.”
The article’s author, Elaine Burke, later confirmed on her Twitter account that the statement was not a typo and Deeny did “offhand” reveal that GT6 was headed to the PlayStation 3, however, he “didn’t elaborate” any further on the subject.
Sony did not talk about Gran Turismo 6 during their PlayStation 4 event this past week, and when questioned about the missing title Shuhei Yoshida (Sony Worldwide Studios president) told Game Informer that “Everyone has a list of 20 things they want to see at this event. This is just day one. We have more days ahead.”
With Gran Turismo 6 having never been officially revealed, it is impossible to say if Deeny’s comment was a simple mistake or an indication that some version of the game (or perhaps even the only version of the game) is in development for the PlayStation 3. The only thing that we know for sure is that it will likely be several years before GT6 is released. Six years passed between the release of Gran Turismo 4 and Gran Turismo 5, and we have no reason to believe that Polyphony Digital won’t be taking their time with the next installment.
Let us know your thoughts in the comments on a possible Gran Turismo 6 release on the PlayStation 3. Was this a gaffe by Deeny, or a confirmation?
