Despite the company’s plans to launch the PlayStation 4 later this year, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president and CEO Jim Ryan has stated that there are still some “highly significant” unannounced games headed to the PlayStation 3. While Ryan did not name any specific titles, his statement adds credibility to recent reports that suggest Gran Turismo 6 will have a PS3 release.
Ryan made the comment during a conversation with the PlayStation Blog, saying:
“Typically history can help us only so far here. We’re actually still selling PS2s in regions such as the Middle East seven years after we introduced PS3. There are a number of reasons why the transition might be a bit more accelerated this time round, but PS3 is a very important part of our portfolio, certainly in 2013, 2014 and probably beyond that.”
“And there’s other stuff yet to be announced, which is highly significant too. There’s a lot coming on PS3 and it’s going to be very important to us for some time yet.”
The Gran Turismo 6 angle to this story comes from a recent Silicon Republic interview with Sony Worldwide Studios senior vice-president Michael Deeny, who very casually listed the racing game as being an upcoming PS3 title. Unfortunately, Deeny did not elaborate on his statement, and neither Sony or Polyphony Digital has officially confirmed anything about GT6.
Despite these two comments from Sony execs, we still can’t say for sure that Gran Turismo 6 is headed for a PlayStation 3 exclusive or split-generation release. At this point, it is best to consider it a rumor until an official announcement is made.
Regardless of the fate of Gran Turismo 6, it does appear that Sony is planning to keep their promise of supporting the PlayStation 3 with new game releases for at least the next two or three years. That is certainly good news for anyone who plans on waiting a bit before jumping on the next generation bandwagon.
